Christmas Moss - Live Aquarium Aquatic Plant for Fish Tank

Christmas Moss is as mysterious as some of the other mosses in the aquarium hobby. There is no consensus on its geographic origins and even the scientific name has a tendency to change. Its growth habits and appearance are just as varied. When grown attached to a piece of driftwood or rock, it forms triangular fronds in the shape of Christmas trees (hence the common name). If allowed to grow free floating, it tends to have a much less organized appearance and the triangular fronds are much less pronounced. In this form, it is often confused for the much more common Java Moss. In lower light, it grows much less densely, and again, is often much less organized in structure. Only under higher light conditions, attached or anchored to an object, does Christmas Moss show its true structure. It will form a pillowy bush of triangular fronds that is very attractive and undemanding.

This moss is very easy to grow in the aquarium, as it will grow with almost any amount of light. Although not as hardy as the legendary Java Moss, it will survive with low light and no CO2. Growth will not be the ideal structure and will be considerably slower, but it will still live. Like other mosses, Christmas Moss prefers cooler temperatures, under 77F. Over this, it tends to suffer, growing more slowly.

As an aquascaping element, its uses are limited to covering hardscape (rocks, driftwood) or creating a moss wall. A moss wall is created by sandwiching the moss between two pieces of mesh and placing this in the back or sides of a tank. The moss eventually grows through the mesh and covers it up, creating a wall of attractive triangular fronds (as seen in the picture above). It can be used as a carpeting plant, however this is not recommended, as it easily gets choked with mulm and debris and becomes an algae magnet.

Echinodorus Red Rubin

Echinodorus Red Rubin for sale
Echinodorus rubin, also known as Red Rubin, is an amphibious aquarium plant that has long red, brown and green leaves in its submerged state. When emerged from the water, the leaves will turn bright green in color. This is a great background plant for smaller tanks but it's usually use as a middle-ground plant in the larger tanks that will add a variety of color and texture to your freshwater planted aquarium.

The Echinodorus Red Rubin is a relatively easy plant to maintain, but grows rather large in the aquarium. Use this aquatic plant as a background in the smaller aquarium, and as a mid-ground focal point in the larger aquarium. Do not allow the leaves of this plant to shade neighboring plants. It requires a moderate level of light of 2 to 3 watts per gallon provided by full spectrum (5000-7000K) bulbs.

Reproduction within this species is by adventitious plants, side shoots, and rhizome division. Simply allow the plant to reproduce by one of the above methods, and when the new plant forms its own leaves, separate and re-plant in another location of the aquarium. The Red Rubin is sensitive to copper, and this type of medication should not be added to the aquarium where it is contained.

The Red Rubin benefits from regular additions of CO2, iron rich fertilizers, and trace elements.

Echinodorus amazonicus

This beautiful aquarium plant is also known as Echinodorus brevipedicellutus. It originates in Brazil and the mid to lower region of the Amazon River basin. It is usually utilised as a centre or focal plant in the aquarium as it gets to be quite large (as do some other Echinodorus species).

The Echinodorus amazonicus can easily grow to 16 inches in height and has light green, linear, lanceolate, and arched leaves which are 3/4 - 11/4 inches wide (2-3 cm). There are three veins extending from the base to the tip of the leaf and two less prominent veins closer to the edges. The first pair of lateral veins come from the central rib, just above the base of the blade. The blade is much longer than the petiole.

This plant is often confused with Echinodorus bleheri which is the more common of the two plants. This plant does poorly in very hard water. It likes medium bright light, warm water and a medium fine gravel bed. Propagation is by adventitious roots or by runner. It prefers a pH of 6.5-7.2 and a temp. of 74-82 degrees F (24-28 degrees C).

Like most Echinodorus species, it grows well both submersed and emersed. In nature, these plants are more often bog type plants with the roots submersed and the leaves up above the water. The floral stalk is thin and comes up out of the water. It may have four to nine white flowers forming on the nodes on the stalk. If left in the water, these flowers won't open. Emersed however, they open nicely and can be fertilized with a feather. The pollen is powdery yellow. The seeds take a long time to form and really only look like a dried up crown in the centre of the long dried flower.

Plantlets form best along the nodes that are submersed. They may also develop emersed if the humidity is fairly high above the water but these plantlets don't grow roots until the plantlets are submersed. Once roots form on the plantlets, they can be gently wiggled off the runner and planted. Be careful not to break or damage the runner as more plantlets will grow on the same runner in a few months.
